Square, the young startup that allows anyone with a modern smartphone to accept credit cards for physical transactions, has reinvented the old-school punch card. They’ve updated their software, Square Register, to allow merchants to reward their repeat customers. As the wallet-in-your-phone get crowded with Passbook in the upcoming iOS6 from Apple and Google’s NFC push with Google Wallet, Square’s strategy of leveraging their existing install base by expanding their existing platform, is not only wise, but wil perhaps give Square the edge when competing with tech giants.
Thanks to Square, soon you can say goodbye to paper punch cards from mom-and-pop shops and still get your free latte after buying ten.
